Perpetual Convent Navelim

The tiny seed sown by Fr. Faustino our Founder on 16th June with four pioneers took deep its root and began flourishing into a tree with its branching emerging out in different parts one such branch was at Navelim. The main aim of starting a convent in this area was to teach catechism to far off places in Navelim thus spreading God’s kingdom.

The sisters laid their feet on the soil of Navelim on 2nd Feb. 1940, on the day of the feast of purification of our lady. The three sisters chosen to begin their mission in the newly founded convent were late Sr. Joana, Sr. Circumcisao and Sr. Victoria. Two helpers Miss Pedrinha and Miss Pidu accompanied them. Fr. Founder was also with them.

The sisters then occupied the house of Mr. Alfred Barreto for their residence and opened a small school on 6th February 1940 where in Portuguese classes, Needlework and letter writing in Konkani was undertaken by the sisters. Later it was discovered that the house where the sisters stayed was a polluted one as deaths had taken place due to tuberculosis, the contagious disease. On hearing the news, Dr. Pelegrinho Dr. Sales advised that to vacate the house and to go to Sancoale for a week to disinfect the house. Thus a dark cloud prevailed over them. Sr. Circumcisao relying on God’s providence expressed her desire to Rev. Fr. Founder of staying at Navelim by putting up a small hut. Seeing their ardent desire, God blessed them with a little bigger residence. In June 1941 a boarding house was opened with three children.

The sisters came practically with nothing but trusting in the Divine Providence, by and by the sisters were provided with all their needs. It was De.PereginoD’Costa, Dr.Sales de Coutinho, and the Parish Priest of our Lady of Rosary Church was a great help to our sisters in the beginning. By God’s greatest blessing on 3rd April 1943 sisters were offered land worth 1000/- at that time by Mr. Saude Furtado who purchased the land from the Fabrica of Navelim. It was a day of great rejoicing. By August 1948 the foundation of the convent on the new land began. The new name given to the convent on its inauguration and blessing was convent of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour. As the years passed by, sisters had to encounter a lot of hardships and suffering which was caused by some people who even went to the Governor to ask for the plot to use it as a playground.

But God had other plans which we see being materialized today for besides the convent and the boarding we have a building each for secondary education and another for Pre- Primary and Primary education. Both the building today provide education to nearly two thousand children with seven sisters and sixty staff members is being blessed as the school has always kept up to its name by achieving good results all through the years. Today the sisters provide education for not only children of Navelim but also those of the neighbouring villages. In March 1987 PSCSchool was chosen as the Centre for SSC Examination. Besides this, the sisters are very involved in the Parish work. In the entire Parish of Navelim, sisters teach Catechesis in the church and chapels and so also animate BCC groups and youth groups.

Trusting in Divine Providence and in the Perpetual Succour of our Lady the sisters move ahead to make Jesus alive in and through their apostolate.
